Recommendation Letters

Information for recruitment participants:

What is a recommendation letter?

A recommendation letter is a letter written by an alumna member of a sorority for the purpose of introducing a recruitment participant to a chapter prior to recruitment.

**Recommendation letters are not required & are not a part of registration for primary recruitment**

How to obtain recommendation letters:

Reach out to your local Alumnae Panhellenic Association to request a recommendation letter. The alumna who is writing your recommendation letter will obtain the proper forms from the sorority with which she is affiliated and will send the letter directly to the chapter.

If you do not have an Alumnae Panhellenic Association in your area, you are welcome to email ttucphrecruitment@gmail.com to request our standard Texas Tech Panhellenic Recommendation Form, and a member of your community can fill it out for you and submit it on your behalf. In your email to us, please include where you are from. We will NOT respond to emails requesting this form until May 1st. The only way you will be able to receive this form is if there is not an Alumnae Panhellenic Association in your area.

You will NOT send any pictures or resumes to Texas Tech Panhellenic or to our chapters directly. Alumnae are responsible for sending these items to chapters directly.

Information for Alumnae:

Thank you for your interest in assisting the women in your community with the Panhellenic Recruitment process. Please consider the following guidelines for providing information to the chapters at Texas Tech University:

Submit based on organization:

It is encouraged that you use the recommendation/reference model outlined by your sorority’s national headquarters. This information can be found in the “Chapter Specific Information” section below.

**NO FOLDERS, NO FLUFF**

What not to include:

We discourage the use of special folders, special paper, binder clips, labeling, glitter, or decorations of any kind. Additional material provided beyond the standard recommendation form/letter will be discarded and not considered during the membership selection process.

It is recommended that you submit your recommendation letter online. If you are providing a hard copy to the chapter, please do not send anything larger than a 9.5x12.5 envelope, and nothing decorative.

These letters are reviewed by advisors only; general chapter members will not see your recommendation letter when making membership decisions. Again, no folders & no fluff.

Deadlines:

There is not a general deadline for having recommendation letters sent in for all chapters. Please see below for the information about how each chapter would like to receive letters and when. (You are welcome to begin sending recommendation letters April 1st.)

**Gifts delivered to chapters in support of a potential new member is not considered during the membership selection process & will not increase their chances of receiving a bid**

Note: a recommendation letter DOES NOT guarantee a bid to membership to a potential new member.

Legacy Information

What is a legacy?

A legacy is typically a sister, mother, or grandmother that is an initiated member of a sorority. These guidelines vary from chapter to chapter, and in some cases, can also include aunts, cousins, and step-relatives.

When registering, recruitment participants will have the option to include information about any legacy relationships.

No golden tickets

While it is a special opportunity to share a legacy connection with a family member, it does not guarantee a bid to membership to a sorority. There are often times more legacies that participate in recruitment than spots in a pledge class. Even being a multi-generational legacy does not guarantee a bid to membership.

Keep an open mind

It is extremely important to remember that sorority life and chapter experiences vary from university to university and also change over time. Recruitment participants and mothers/family members should stay open-minded throughout the recruitment process.

Does being a legacy limit membership options?

No, being a legacy of a Panhellenic sorority does not hurt your chances of joining another chapter. Sororities understand that recruitment participants may not always feel at home in the chapter for which they are a legacy.
